There’s plenty of racing to look forward to this week, providing a new cold snap across the country doesn’t affect it too much. The feature racing is Saturday at Ascot, with the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase the pick of the action. We run through what to look forward to on each day this week, including which Racing Club horses could be in action!
MONDAY
Four meetings to kick off the week, with both Hereford and Punchestown passing their early morning inspections. The most eye-catching runner across the cards is Maughreen, who is a half-sister to the impressive Faugheen – she is in action in the Mares Bumper on the Punchestown card (4pm).
Entries will also be announced for Saturday’s key action, including the Clarence House Chase, where Jonbon and El Fabiolo are widely expected to take each other on in a mammoth clash.
TUESDAY
Five meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, although Chepstow faces an inspection beforehand due to the freezing temperatures at the beginning of the week. Plumpton is the other jumps meeting on offer, whilst there is also a trio of all-weather fixtures to look forward to at Newcastle, Dundalk and Wolverhampton.
We also see the latest entries for Cheltenham Festival, with entries announced for:
- Arkle Novices’ Chase
- National Hunt Chase
- Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase
- Turners Novices’ Chase
WEDNESDAY
Wednesday sees Newbury host a competitive jumps card, with further jumps action to be had at Southwell. The flat action comes on the all-weather, with Newcastle in the afternoon and Kempton hosting an evening card.
THURSDAY
Wincanton hosts the feature racing on Thursday, with the Somerset National the pick of the races on the card. However, Racing Club fans will be focused on Newcastle’s card, with Wendigo entered to race in the opening race on their card. It is only an entry at the time of writing though, so there is no guarantee he will run there!
Further jumps action is on the cards at Ludlow and Fairyhouse, whilst the sole flat racing comes from Southwell.
FRIDAY
Lingfield kicks off its Winter Million Festival, with the feature being the Grade 2 Lightning Novices’ Chase. Venetia Williams Djelo is unbeaten over fences and looks set to take on the likes of JPR One and Master Chewie in the feature.
Elsewhere there is another excellent jumps card at Market Rasen, whilst the flat action comes on the all-weather at Newcastle and Wolverhampton.
SATURDAY
Racing Club’s VIP horse Dayzee is entered in the Winter Oaks Fillies’ Handicap (1.25pm) at Lingfield, with a bumper £100,000 prize pot up for grabs. The Grade 1 Clarence House Chase could see two of the most exciting horses in training take each other on, as Willie Mullins’ El Fabiolo could take on Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon in what looks a mouthwatering clash.
There’s also a fantastic jumps card at Haydock, that features the Grade 2 Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle as well the competitive Peter Marsh Handicap Chase. The rest of the action on Saturday comes from Taunton (jumps) and Wolverhampton (all-weather flat).
SUNDAY
Sunday brings Lingfield’s Winter Million Festival to an end, with the Fleur De Lys Chase the feature race on their card. The £165,000 contest is set to include the likes of Protektorat and L’Homme Presse, so should be a good race to watch.
Further jumps racing takes place at Fakenham and Thurles, with the latter hosting a couple of Grade 2 races on their card in Ireland. The sole flat fixture comes from Chelmsford, where RC silks could again be on show, with Letmelivemylife potentially racing on their card if declared on Friday.
