Blackwater put in a promising effort on debut to finish fifth at Chelmsford on Thursday evening, showing a good attitude that suggests we are sure to have plenty of exciting days out with him in the future.
Sent off as an 80/1 outsider, Blackwaterfoot raced wide in the early stages, having been drawn in stall 10, and jockey William Cox opted to hold him up towards the rear of the field. When asked for his effort, he kept on strongly towards the finish and finished best of those that were held up in the rear (first four horses home were all up with the pace throughout). It’s also worth noting that the four horses who finished ahead of him were considerably shorter in the betting (only one of them was a double-figure price), so it was a hugely encouraging effort for his first run and left his owners with plenty to be excited about moving forward.
Jockey William Cox said after the race:
“I was really happy with him. He acted like a pro from start to finish and gave me a lovely ride. He was well-behaved in the stalls and jumped out ok, and I felt it was best to just hold him up out the back and let him get used to the race. He ran green in the early stages, but as we turned in he finished the race off really well, weaving in between horses and kept nice and straight. Trip-wise I think that was absolutely fine and he handled the surface nicely, and I’m sure he will improve mentally with that race now under his belt. He’s an exciting horse and hopefully it won’t be long until he’s winning races.”
The morning after the race, trainer Paul Attwater reported:
“He returned straight back to Newlands after his race last night, and he’s trotted up sound this morning, which is great. I was pleased as punch with his debut, everything went well, and speaking to William Cox after the race, I expect we will look to keep him at that sort of distance and a similar surface for his next race, which should be in the next few weeks.”
As a team, we were delighted with his effort on debut and he’s left us eagerly awaiting his next race. He is sure to have learned plenty from the run and we’re confident we have another exciting horse on our hands!
